Allentown is home to a number of historic churches built in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, many of which are home to beautiful stained glass windows. Unfortunately, many of these stained glass windows are now reaching the point where they are beginning to decline structurally because of their age and are in dire need of restoration.

Restoration Process for Allentown Church Stained Glass

As a team who is passionate about stained glass, we view its historic conservation and preservation as a matter of upmost importance. When conducting repairs, we strive to be as conservative as possible by replacing only what is absolutely necessary. Whenever we can, we will save the original glass and materials unless they are past the point where they can be salvaged.

Our official restoration process begins with an onsite visit and evaluation. The stained glass is inspected for signs of deterioration like bowing, sagging, cracks, and white or chalky metal. Then, based on our findings, we create a report, which is sent to the church for review along with a proposal for repairs. Once we receive approval from you, we begin the repair process.

The stained glass is carefully removed from the church and brought to our studio so it can be repaired. It is cleaned, taken apart, and cleaned again. The old lead caming is discarded along with any severely damaged pieces of glass. Then, replacement pieces are used in their place and the window is assembled together again. New cement and brace bars make it stronger than ever before. The stained glass is cleaned one final time and sent back to the church.

The final step of the process is re-installing the stained glass. This is done carefully and sometimes with the help of specialized equipment or machinery. Then, a protective covering is added to guard the windows from any threats they may encounter in the future. Now, your church can enjoy its lovely stained glass for another decade.
