Built in the late 1800s, Market Street Baptist Church has stood as a pillar of faith in Zanesville, Ohio for nearly 150 years. The church features 33 magnificent “Tiffany Style” stained glass windows that have illuminated the sanctuary for generations of worshippers. These artistic treasures, created by unknown master craftsmen, include elaborate hand-painted biblical scenes, intricate lead caming, and rare antique glass techniques rarely seen in modern stained glass.
Prior to restoration, these windows had not undergone major conservation since their original installation. The photo above shows the exterior condition before renovation began.
Despite their deteriorated condition, the church has remained dedicated to preserving these irreplaceable works of art that tell the congregation’s spiritual story. As the church continues its mission in the Zanesville community, the historic building is undergoing a much-needed restoration, beginning with the two largest and most significant sanctuary windows.
Stained Glass Restoration Project Background
Scottish Stained Glass conducted a comprehensive assessment of all 33 stained glass windows, determining the causes of deterioration and crafting a detailed conservation plan. While the original craftsmanship was exceptional, the windows suffered from numerous issues attributed to age and environmental factors over the past century and a half.
The lead caming had severely warped, causing panels to show a wavy appearance. This warping stressed the glass, resulting in numerous cracks and breaks. Additionally, the protective glass installed decades ago lacked proper ventilation, creating a greenhouse effect that accelerated deterioration by trapping heat and moisture against the stained glass and wooden frames.
Community Impact and Testimonials
The congregation has been deeply moved witnessing the transformation of their beloved windows. Many members express amazement seeing colors and details emerge that had been obscured for generations.
“These windows tell our story,” shared one congregation member. “Seeing them restored has brought incredible joy to our entire community.
