Church Stained Glass Restoration in Kentucky
Before European settlement, Kentucky was long inhabited by Indigenous people who used the land primarily for farming maize and beans. Then in the late 1700’s, Daniel Boone and a group of axmen built the Wilderness Road, allowing for migration into Kentucky. Not long after, the territory became known as Kentucky County, Virginia and numerous missionaries left Virginia to settle in the Kentucky Frontier. Presbyterian, Methodist, and Baptist communities began to flourish in the area, leading to the religious revival known as the Second Great Awakening. Then in the 1830’s, Barton W. Stone founded the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Many of these old churches still stand today in Kentucky and are considered vital to the preservation of the state’s culture and history.
Many of these glorious old churches contain beautiful examples of stained glass, some of which are among Kentucky’s most highly regarded works of art. These 100-year old relics tie together the religious communities of the past to those which exist in Kentucky today. They are rare and extraordinary works of art. Unfortunately, many are at risk of being lost forever due to age and a general decline in their structural integrity.
