Church Stained Glass Restoration for Virginia
Virginia has a rich and interesting religious history. Jamestown was the first place that Europeans settled in the United States and soon after colonization began in 1607, the Church of England was legally established in the area. Individual piety and religious devotion were stressed heavily during this time, which eventually paved the way for the First Great Awakening, which caused the Congregational and Presbyterian churches to split, while at the same time strengthening both the Methodist and Baptist denominations. Many missionary societies were founded at this time, leading to the development of numerous churches throughout Virginia.
Remarkably, some of these churches still exist today, despite being 100-200 years old. What’s more, many contain enchanting examples of stained glass. Some of these are the finest, most breathtaking works of art found in our country today.
Sad but true, many of Virginia’s stained glass windows are at risk of being lost forever. At some point, the structural components of stained glass begin to weaken and restoration becomes necessary. If the damage is neglected, pieces could start falling out one by one, or the entire panel could collapse, leading to the total destruction of a rare and valuable work of art.
