The area quickly became a hub for political activity and its population increased rapidly. Though the Anglican church was dominant in Charleston during the colonial area, it has since become a melting pot of religions and different cultures. Today, it is home to groups belonging to Jewish, Catholic, Methodist, and Christian faiths, along with many others, and is known as “The Holy City.” Beautiful churches, built in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, can be found within Charleston and play a strong role in preserving its history as well as defining its present architectural character. The preservation of these age old buildings, as well as the glorious stained glass within them, is critical.

Restoration Process for Charleston Church Stained Glass

The first step in restoring your stained glass windows is an inspection. If you see any signs of degradation, it’s time to call a professional! Unfortunately, there are numerous ways for damage to occur so a simple walk around the building may not be enough. You can scan each window carefully and look upward while standing at the base if needed but even then you might miss something since there are many types of wear-and-tear such as sagging lead or cracks that will only show up from certain angles. If possible we recommend hiring someone who specializes in this type of restoration work. This is a service we are happy to provide.

After we inspect and evaluate your stained glass, you can expect us to provide a detailed proposal. This will describe the problems with your window and offer solutions that will make it as good as new again.

We prefer to repair stained glass in our workshop because it’s more efficient. We clean the stained glass windows, take them apart for better access, then replace any broken or missing pieces of glass with new ones that match as closely as possible. The old leading is exchanged f or new and hand-painted details are carefully recreated. Then, the stained glass is assembled back together.

Once the repairs are complete, we will polish your beautiful stained glass and carefully return it your church in Charleston. Then, we will  install it back in place. Now you can enjoy this stunning work of art for another 100 years!
