A large portion of the land in the Greater New Haven area is considered to be part of the National Historic Districts and has been well-preserved over the years. Walking down the streets of Hillhouse Avenue or one of New Haven’s historic buildings, you will come across some of the loveliest and oldest churches in New England, many of which are adorned with stained glass windows.

Restoration Process for New Haven Church Stained Glass

Restoring stained glass is not an overnight process. It requires careful consideration, time, and planning, as well as the skill of an experienced team. Though the process is time-consuming and tedious, we urge you to not let this deter you. The results will be well worth it in the end!

Usually, the process begins with a consultation. The church contacts us to discuss their project, then an appointment is made for an onsite visit. During this visit, the stained glass is inspected and evaluated so that a plan can be made for repairs. These findings are disclosed to the church in addition to possible courses of action. Once the church board approves the plan, the repair process begins.

In some rare cases, we are able to complete repairs onsite without much interruption to day to day operations. However, most of the time, the stained glass needs to be removed so that it can be fully taken apart and restored. This work is conducted in our studio.

After the stained glass soaks in a tub of warm water and gentle cleaners, it is ready to be taken apart. Piece by piece, it is removed from the tub and laid out according to the blueprint we have created of its original design. Any pieces of glass that are missing or badly damaged are replaced. The old lead caming is safely disposed of and new leading is used in its place. The panel is cemented together and, if necessary, reinforced with metal brace bars.

After all this is said and done, the stained glass is ready to be returned to the church. Carefully, the windows are mounted in their frames and secured in place. Sometimes a protective covering is also added as an additional precaution. Now, the stained glass can be enjoyed and observed for another 100 years.
